Program Description:

The Diploma in Business Administration is a 2 year program offered by Access International College (AIC) which prepares graduates for a broad range of entry-level business administrative assistant and clerical positions in private, non-profit as well as government sectors. Graduates from this program will find they have a firm grasp on business fundamentals such as accounting, finance, economics, marketing, organizational behavior, statistics and management information systems. Through this program, students will also have developed business associated analytical, computer and communication skills. This two year diploma program builds a firm foundation in the students' knowledge and technical skills in: business concepts, theories and practices; computer and information technologies in daily business operation; the impact of various economic legal, cultural, geographical, and political systems on business activities; confidence and competence in business communication and teamwork skills necessary for the success of business; strategies applied to government programs and policies to facilitate business activities; strategies and skills utilized to negotiate effectively and overcome cultural barriers, and analysis of basic business issues and formulation of constructive recommendations.

Upon completion, graduates will receive:

Diploma in Business Administration is licensed under the Private Vocational Schools Act (Alberta). This will lead to ready employment by all graduates of this program. Especially in the booming economy of Alberta, various job opportunities are almost guaranteed for the right candidates. A two year working permit for our graduate will eventually lead to an immigration status.

Description

The 2-Year Diploma Program in Business Administration helps students grasp business fundamentals such as accounting, finance, economics, marketing, organizational behavior, statistics and management information system. The program will also help students develop business analytical skills, computer skills and communication skills.

Admission Requirements

Students must meet ONE of the following criteria:

1. Alberta High School Diploma, verified by transcript, with 50% or better in a Grade 12 English and 50% or better in a Grade 12 Math, or non-Alberta equivalent.

   OR

2. (Alberta) High School Equivalency Diploma, verified by transcript, or non-Alberta equivalent.

And ALL of the following criteria:

1. At least 18 years of age.

2. For applicants whose first language is not English, proof of a minimum TOEFL score of 500 for the paper-based (173 for the computer-based test) or a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or equivalent on the AIC English Placement Test.

3. Applicants must have 50% or better in an Alberta Grade 12 Computer 30 level course or non-Alberta equivalent of which applicants can demonstrate to school administration of evidence in computer literacy, technical proficiency and basic computer skill in the operation of a computer.

Mature Admission

Students must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  1. At least 19 years of age.

  2. Out of school for at least two years.

  3. 33 credits towards an Alberta High School Diploma, verified by transcript, with 50% or better in a Grade 10 English course.

  4. Successful result on an aptitude test administered by the school.

  5. For applicants whose first language is not English, proof of a minimum TOEFL score of 500 for the paper-based test (173 for the computer-based test) or a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or an equivalent on the AIC English Placement Test.

Grade Point Average

The Grade Point Average is computed as follows:

  1. Multiply the grade value of the course by the credits for that course. The product of this multiplication will be the Grade Points.

  2. Divide the cumulative grade points by the cumulative attempted credits

Graduation Requirements

To graduate from the 2-Year diploma program at AIC you must:

  1. Satisfactorily complete all required 16 selected courses out of the total pool of 20 courses, which comprise your Certificate or Diploma program in relations to your area of interest. English related courses in both two years are mandatory.

  2. A minimum pass mark is required to pass a course, any mark less than that will result in the student being awarded a failing (F) grade.

  3. For courses taken at AIC, at least 25% of the courses comprising your program must be completed at AIC.

  4. Student must earn at least a cumulative GPA of 2.0 to graduate from the 2-Year diploma program at AIC.

Note: At the beginning of the semester in which you expect to graduate, you must submit an "Application for Graduation" form to the Registrar¡¯s Office. This form must be signed and submitted by the student, or the Registrar¡¯s Office will not act to audit your eligibility to graduate.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

First Year Courses

ENGL200         College English                                                                                - 3 credits -

This course is very important in entering into an undergraduate program of business administration. It prepares students for necessary grammatical writing and oral presentation to ensure their ability to proceed with business topics on economics as all business-related courses require a high standard of English writing. This course will emphasize on proper rhetoric and logic development style in writing.

ACCT201        Financial Accounting I                                                                       - 3 credits -

This course covers basic accounting concepts and principles, their application to transactions, financial statement, and an introductory consideration of the balance sheet and income statement.

MKTG200       Introduction to Marketing                                                                   - 3 credits -

Students are introduced to the basic marketing tools, segmentation, positioning, product, price, distributor and promotions. Topics also include market research, buyer behavior, planning, marketing in a global setting. The relationship between marketing and society is also introduced. Teaching methods include lecture, current readings, videos, class exercises and case analysis.

ECON201      Principles of Microeconomics                                                             - 3 credits -

Students learn of the basic theories and applications for microeconomics. Microeconomic covers the general price theory, theory of the firm, market structure, production, costing, revenue and profit maximization, and theory of distribution.

QMGT202     Concepts in Statistics                                                                           - 3 credits -

This course introduces to student the basic probability concepts, descriptive measures, probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, linear regression and correlation in business applications.

ACCT203     Financial Accounting II                                                                         - 3 credits -

This course introduces business partnership and corporate financial accounting concepts, including accounting for capital assets, liabilities, equity and investments.

BLAW205    Legal Studies                                                                                       - 3 credits -

This course provides a foundation for various laws in Canada including criminal law, business laws in consumer and property law as well as negligence law, and environment laws to help students understanding the meanings of the various laws as well as applying case studies and precedence¡¯s.

 

ECON201   Principles of Macroeconomics                                                               - 3 credits -

This course teaches the students of the principles and applications for national policies in employment, GDP, inflation and monetary/fiscal policies.

MGMT200  Basic Business Management                                                                  - 3 credits -

In order to succeed in today¡¯s fast paced business environment, it is important to acquire computer skills. More and more small and medium-sized businesses have begun to use this media. Students will be introduced to the use of internet, spreadsheet, word processing, which is paramount to succeed in completing an undergraduate program.

ENGL201  Effective Speaking, Writing and Presentation                                         - 3 credits -

This course teaches diction, pronunciation, interpretation, projection, organization, presentation and speeches. Assigned topics: extemporaneous speaking, elementary debate, and paned participation.

Second Year Courses

COMB302 Computer Applications & Info-technology                                               - 3 credits -

This course gives an introduction of computers to the students including Windows 2000, internet operation, application of programming, formulating components, and basic commands. It also touches on laptops, software and computer fundamentals as well as the newest information technologies in the industry.

MGMT300 Organizational Behavior                                                                         - 3 credits -

This part focuses on the macro aspects of organizational behavior. Topics to cover include human needs and motivation, learning, perception and attribution, or concepts related to individuals and groups in organizations. Teaching methodology includes lectures, discussion sessions and case analysis.

FINA302   Business Finance I                                                                                   - 3 credits -

This course teaches students the concepts of financial management, which include financial statement analysis, long term financial planning, time value of money, investment criteria and capital budgeting techniques.

MGMT305 Business Communications                                                                       - 3 credits -

This course explores effective communication within modern business. Students will learn to write more effectively according to the seven "C¡¯s": clearly, completely, concisely, concretely, courteously, considerately and correctly. Appropriate formats for business letters, memorandums and reports are examined. Interpersonal skills required to develop effective relationships in businesses are studied.

QMGT300 Quantitative Methods                                                                               - 3 credits -

This course focus teaches students of the quantitative tools available for business decision making, focusing on problem solving through model building. Topics include business decision trees, inventory models, linear programming and various applications.

FINA305   Advanced Finance                                                                                   - 3 credits -

The principles and techniques of investing in securities are discussed with emphasis on stocks and bonds. Topics include portfolio selection and performance measurement, valuation of bonds and stocks, and the application of financial theory to investment decisions. Security analysis includes fundamental approaches with an emphasis on financial statement analysis.

MGMT303 Business Administration                                                                          - 3 credits -

This course introduces the functional areas of business and the integration of these areas for effective and efficient operation of organizations in a variety of sectors. Emphasis is placed on effective team work skills, research skills and decision-making skills.

MGMT315 Operations Management                                                                         - 3 credits -

This course teaches students of the quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques used in the management of goods and services production, focusing on the key decision points and on mathematical methods for evaluating alternatives.

QMGT308 Business Statistics                                                                                   - 3 credits -

This course introduces the student to descriptive and inferential statistics. The concept of probability and its application to business situations will be introduced. Hypothesis testing procedures and regression analysis will be introduced and used to analyze various business applications. Applications will be business oriented and will be analyzed by manual and computerized methods.

COMB309 Management Information Systems                                                          - 3 credits -

This course focuses on the role of information technology in an organization and its application to business problems. Techniques for designing, implementing and managing formation systems are presented. Topics covered include hardware and software, file management, database organization, networking and telecommunications, systems development and design, flowcharting, system security, backup and recovery, and artificial intelligence.
